Dr Jean Murray spent 20 years as a medical scientist occupying senior roles in metropolitan and country laboratories before becoming a government policy adviser. In 2001 she established the Ethics and Privacy Policy Unit of the SA Department of Human Services. After leaving government in 2009, she divided her time between teaching in the post-graduate program delivered by Health Care Management at Flinders, delivering workshops on leadership and women's empowerment in the Gender Consortium's international program, writing national bioethics policy as a contracted expert consultant, and her roles on several boards. She served as the consultant ethicist on the Clinical Treatment Ethics Committee for the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Dr Murray continues to work with the Gender Consortium as a coach and trainer.

As the Principal Consultant, Ethico-Legal Reform for the South Australian Government she developed, reviewed and proposed amendments to State and policy and legislation in ethically complex areas. Dr Murray has represented the SA government on national Health Ministers’ policy advisory groups on genetics, privacy, autopsies, organ donation, assisted reproductive technology, human cloning and embryo research and other ethically complex issues. She served as a Director on state and national health, bioethics and education boards, and as Secretary of the Australasian Association of Bioethics and Health Law.

Dr Murray is active in women's policy at state, national and international levels, having served on the SA Women's Advisory Council and a Commonwealth’s Women's Secretariat, and as a Trustee on the SA Women's Trust.
