Kaye Mehta retired as Head of Teaching Section for Nutrition & Dietetics at Flinders University in 2018, after 24 years as an academic. She taught and researched in social nutrition, public health and community nutrition. Kaye worked for more than 20 years years as a dietitian-nutritionist in community settings prior to teaching, and established herself as a leader in community nutrition in South Australia. Over those years she developed, implemented and evaluated nutrition promotion programs primarily with low-income communities, including unemployed young people, Aboriginal people and first-generation Italian people. Her research interests include: nutrition program evaluation, social determinants of food choice, critical literacy on the food system and food marketing to children. Kaye has been an active advocate for protection of children against the adverse effects of unhealthy food marketing, and for stronger public health nutrition programs in South Australia. Kaye has published and presented extensively on her research interests. She engaged strongly with community nutrition programs and provided opportunities for students to engage with community groups in all aspects of nutrition promotion.
