Prof Marmo holds a PhD in Applied Social Science (University of Lancaster, UK) and an LLB (Honours) (Università di Salerno, Italy). She joined the Flinders Law School in 2005, after having held positions in the UK (University of Leicester and the Liverpool John Moores University).

Prof Marmo is a leading expert on human mobility, human rights and gendered criminology. Her research has been cited by academics and senior policymakers worldwide, profiled by several prominent international and national media outlets, formed the base for a British Parliamentary Q&A session and used to inform a documentary in Britain. She is an active contributor to national and state inquiries.

Prof Marmo has published/co-published extensively in the area of transnational criminal matters, including books such as: 'A research agenda for a human rights centred criminology'; 'Narrating Injustice Survival'; 'Transnational Crime and Criminal Justice'; 'Race, Gender and the Body'; and 'Crime, Justice and Human Rights'. Over the years, she authored over 40 articles and book chapters in top quality academic journals and distinguished book publishers.

She has attracted external funding from a number of sources, including the joint initiative EU-Australian Government, the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA), the Ian Potter Foundation and the South Australian Law Foundation.

At present, she is Chief Investigator in mutliple research projects on contemporary forms of modern slavery in Australia and South Australia, including Forced Marriage and contributes to shape local and national policies (@stopslaverysa).

Prof Marmo is a multiple award-winning tertiary education academic, with the latest award received in 2023 (BGL Team Teaching Award) for leading the Flinders Criminology team in its curriculum renovation. She was the first-ever recicient at national level of the ANZ Society of Criminology Excellence in Teaching Award, demonstrating leadership and academic distinction in the field.

In 2023, she was the recipient of the Flinders University BGL College Awards in Teaching Excellence ‘Teaching Excellence Team Award’.

In 2020, she was the recipient of the Flinders University BGL College ‘Outstanding Achievement in Engagement and Impact’ Research Excellence Award.

In 2018, she was the recipient of the ANZ Society of Criminology inaugural Award for Excellence in Teaching.

In 2012, she was awarded a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning by the Australian Government (Former Office for Learning and Teaching).

In 2011, she was awarded the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, Flinders University.
